New and Improved Kirksville!

Sometimes a change is nice—especially when that change involves getting a useful store or a yummy new restaurant. Oftentimes people assume that Kirksville is still living in the past and is apart from civilization. However, there are many businesses that want to head on over to Kirksville to attract the college community as well as the “townies.” Today, we will be counting down the top 5 new places coming to Kirksville!
5. Rue 21 – I put this one the lowest on the list because as of now, it is already open. I definitely love clothes shopping, and this store fits my budget. The best part is while most associate it with just women’s clothing, there is a whole half of the store dedicated to men’s clothing as well! If you have a formal coming up and you forgot to bring that one dress with the straps that would’ve totally gone with those new shoes you bought, maybe you can find a good substitution for it at Rue 21 if you’re in a pinch.
4. Menards – Okay, we already have a Home Depot. Why do we need a Menards? Well, it is always nice to have options, and Menards is full of them. I once heard it described as “a place where you can pick up a 2x4 and a gallon of milk.” Sometimes a one-stop-shop is where you need to go. There are tons of appliances and tools that you can pick up to make your home feel like home. Construction is said to start in 2017.
3. Hobby Lobby – As a crafty person myself, I sometimes get frustrated when I have to go to Walmart and settle on something for a craft due to their limited selection. If you’re like me, then you must be beyond excited to have an entire store dedicated to crafts coming to Kirksville. Hobby Lobby has always been my home away from home, and, again, it is always nice to have a variety. The store is projected to open in September 2017.
2. Smoothie King – It’s time to download your Smoothie King app and get ready for a location to come to Kirksville! It’s always nice to have a little boost for your pre- or post-workout treat. Unfortunately for me, I tend to find the smoothies with the most calories, but there is definitely an upside to having a smoothie joint so close to campus. There are many healthy options and delicious options available. Sometimes all you need is a fruity drink to power through the day, and hopefully by this spring we can all enjoy one!
1. Take Root Café – This is number one for a reason. Take Root Café is not your average restaurant. It has a “pay what you can” policy. This type of restaurant is desperately needed in a city like Kirksville. The average income is skewed because of the number of professors and college students. If you go on Take Root Kirksville’s website, you will see that “Adair County has nearly one in five [residents] who are food insecure.” By having a way for people to be able to feed their families a warm meal without having to empty their wallets, Take Root could help solve the epidemic in this county. As college students, we often joke about being poor, but most of us still have a good support system. For those who don’t, this is a good way to still eat healthy foods without having to sacrifice an entire meal. I truly encourage everyone to go visit this place and really try and pay the full amount for your meal, or at least donate to this cause. This is a beautiful way for the community to come together and make Kirksville a better place to live for everyone.
